The Hike On Electricity Tariff
Constant electricity supply has been the greatest
wish of the average Nigerian. If this is done, it will give room for businesses to thrive in the country. But achieving this result has been so impossible, you can assume it to be a situation of a lion passing through the hole of a needle, because over the years we have seen politicians making power stability the cardinal point during their electioneering campaign. But immediately they assume power, we start hearing one excuse or the other on why they could not achieve it, or in other cases the matter is totally swept under the carpet.
The people of Nigeria are so familiar with this norm, or the antics of these politicians, so the masses now sort out other means of providing power for themselves, by acquiring one generator sets thus making the bills to be paid by these innocent citizens very alarming, as they have to upset their bills.
They have to keep buying petroleum products for their generator set, in the process making Nigerians to pay for power consumption at a very exorbitant rate.
Before now, the Federal High Court in Lagos gave an injunction, that no electricity fees should be increased, but the Federal Government ignored the decision of the Court, and went ahead to announce the increment of electricity tariff, starting from February 1st. This action the labour unions resisted immediately by going into one day nationwide warning strike. The National President of N.L.C, Aliyu Wabba, stated during the peaceful protest in the streets of Abuja, that Nigerians would not accept the 45% electricity hike, that this will bring untold hardship to the innocent citizens of Nigeria.
The labour leaders insisted that our lawmakers should make laws that will benefit the common man, instead of making laws that will constantly impoverish the common man.
The protest was also experienced in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Umuahia and Rivers State. In Rivers State, a Labour Party chieftain, Isaac Wowon, stated that the increment of electricity tariff, would bring more pains to the people, especially now that electricity supply is still not improved. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, also condemned the increment on electricity tariff, and he backed the labour unions for their swift intervention to stop the increment.
The Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, stated that the hike in electricity is the bitter pill Nigerians have to swallow, to make power supply stable in the country. He further stated that the electricity distribution company needed money to purchase more equipment to enhance better power supply all over the country.
The question most Nigerians are asking is, is it our money the federal government wants to use to improve power? What has happened to all the allocations given to the power sector? Why must we suffer for them to do their job? Why didn’t the Federal Government source funds through other means and improve the power supply, before the masses start paying for it?
Why should the masses always be the ones to pay for the financial recklessness of our leaders. If the Federal Government are so sure that once this equipment are bought, power will be much improved, I think they would have looked for money through other means. I think they want to use the monies of the innocent citizens of this country to conduct an experiment, which I truly doubt if it will work.
This shows the insensitivity and insincerity of our leaders. They always claim they have the plight of the masses at heart, but their actions have always proven otherwise.
If our politicians really care about our well-being, such decision will not be made as to further put the citizens into more suffering. This further goes to explain how our leaders truly feel about us because they always sit in their comfort zone to make decisions on our behalf knowing it won’t affect them, as they have already enriched themselves with monies made for developmental projects. So they are living a very flashy and flamboyant lifestyles, so what the people go through is not their business.
I want to use this opportunity to remind our leaders of the campaign promises they made to Nigerians, how they would improve the lives of the masses, and how they would make life better for us, so we are saying that this step of increment in electricity fees is not one of those ways to make our lives better, so I am calling on the Federal Government to retrace their steps, now that they still have the chance to do so, because Nigerians are watching them.
