Of Sustainability And Continuity In RSUST
It was Pauline R.
Kezer of the Institute of Policies at the Harvard University that postulated some years ago that “Continuity gives us roots, change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new height.”
Obviously, this is the scenario with the state owned university, the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) as Prof. Blessing Didia took over the mantle of leadership.
The Prof of Anatomy and the current Vice-Chancellor of RSUST has consistently promised to sustain, maintain and continue the legacies of Prof. Barineme Fakae. The erudite professor parades very intimidating qualities as an accomplished academician, a scientist and attitude administrator.
Yet, his record as a former council chairman is a manifestation of a man in touch with the people. As he was conducted round the vicinity of the university by the former vice chancellor, Prof. Didia assured that his administration would consolidate on the predecessor’s legacies.
It is no longer news that the visitor to the university, Goveror Nyesom Wike, has earlier appointed Prof. Blessing Didia in acting capacity to replace Prof. Barineme Fakae, who has just completed his two term as vice chancellor, while Prof. Boma Oruwari is now the acting Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university. This singular appointment has pre-empted any internal crises that would have arisen if there was a lacuna from the vice chancellor’s position.
Prof. Didia holds his MB.BS from Benin, MD (UPH), FASN, Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Basic Medical Science College of Health Science, a former Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, College provost and member of Council of University of Port Harcourt.
Consequently, the erudite don has delivered many inaugural lectures which include “Man know thyself.” The great philosopher, Socrates, has once written on the term “Man Know Thyself”, which encapsulates man’s curiosity, manipulative tendencies, inquisitiveness as a social being.
As a medical doctor, he deals with the study of structural and functional features of man, most especially treating diseases that torment mankind.
Apparently, Prof. Blessing Didia’s current position will allow him to x-ray and do more anatomy on physical human being that work in the university, both the internal and external publics of the institution to move RSUST to greater height.
It is important to note that when Prof. Fakae was conducting the new vice chancellor around the vicinity on his last working day, the acting vice chancellor remarked that Prof. Fakae has made tremendous achievements in providing quality services in the university, promising to sustain the work done so far.
As Prof. Didia commended the outgoing vice chancellor on his hard work and dexterity, the excited former vice chancellor said: “I am happy he is a scientist.”
The lesson learnt here is the flow of mutual understanding and the bond of friendship, excellence and high degree of credible performance between the two administrators.
Thus, there are serious indications that Prof. Didia, being astute administrator, will propel the university. Prof. Didia has had an odyssey with politics and academia. In 1990, he was appointed chairman of Ikwerre Local Government area of Rivers State before going back to his constituency, the university where he has held many positions. This explains why he will succeed.
In the words of Peter Drucker, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by result not attribution”. Many believe that the acting vice chancellor has charisma, zeal, enthusiasm and courage to pilot the affairs of the institution.
To ensure sustainability and continuity, there must be conscious effort by the entire stakeholders to vigorously pursue the vision of the leadership of the university which will be in tandem with the expectation of the people of Rivers State.
It behooves everyone to deploy their wisdom, energy, intelligence and connection to take the university to the promised land. This is not time for castigation, segregation, opposition, chauvinism, or egoism, but the time for total consolidation.
Moreover, as the new vice chancellor takes charge of affairs at RSUST, it is important to upgrade both existing human and capital development.
To move the university forward, there will a deliberate effort to dismantle all internal wrangling and clandestine opposition. It is in the atmosphere of peace and tranquility that the new vice-chancellor will achieve sustainability and continuity, which will be shared by all.
