Commission Advises Early Retirement Preparations
The Rivers State Local Government Service Commission has advised serving officers in the local government service to start early retirement preparations.
A commissioner in the commission, Hon. Blessing Ejii who said this at a two day workshop and seminar for junior and intermediate staff the commission also called on those already retired to vocate their offices so as to enhance growth in the service.
“You see some people are afraid of retirement they keep working and even when retirement letter comes, they do not want to leave.
“As you know, if someone does not vacate, there will be no occupation, therefore the system will not grow”, she said.
The commissioner also lamented the attitude of some civil servants who refused to go home after being notified of retirement, pointing out that such situation does not enhance growth in the service.
Hon. Ejii who is a member of the retirement committee of the commission, said that the committee has already outlined its activities and stressed t he need for pension desk officers and accountants of the 23 local government areas to submit creditable reports to facilitate the work of the committee.
She said that the seminar was designed to upgrade the knowledge of both junior and intermediate staff of the various councils on public procurement processes and how to abide by due process in everything they are doing.
She promised that similar the seminar will be packaged for other category staff of the local government system in the near future to sensitize them on pre-retirement and preparations.
The commissioner also urged the participants not to throw away what they have learnt, saying that the seminar should ginger them to prepare for their retirement from the service.
