NGE Backs Buhari’s Anti-Graft War
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed total support to President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s fight against corruption, and efforts to recover stolen funds from past government functionaries and their cronies.
The NGE made its position known in a communique issued by its Standing Committee at the end of a meeting which ended last Saturday in Sokoto, Sokoto State.
The communiqué, signed by the acting President of the NGE, Garba Deen Mohammad, and General Secretary, Victoria Ibanga, commended the fight against corruption embarked upon by the Federal Government, especially in its effort to recover the country’s stolen money that is mostly stashed abroad.
The communiqué also advised that these efforts should be sustained, but insisted that rule of law should be strictly adhered to.
The guild further expressed worry at the rate of instability of the exchange rate of the Naira to other major currencies, and urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to formulate and implement policy measures geared towards stabilising the exchange rate in order to restore confidence in the local currency and in the economy as a whole.
The guild deplored the rising wave of crime in the country, especially armed robbery and kidnapping, and urged relevant security agencies to rise to the occasion to safeguard lives and property.
The Editors, once again, drew the attention of the Federal Government to the rising unemployment in the country, and urges it to make job creation a priority.
They also noted with concern, the hardship being experienced by some journalists in the country due to irregular remuneration and poor condition of service, and urged media owners to urgently address the issues.
The Standing Committee also unanimously expressed confidence in the Acting President, Mallam Garba Deen Mohammad, and pledged to ensure a seamless transition in line with the tradition of continuity which the guild is known for.
It expressed its gratitude to the government and good people of Sokoto State for the hospitality extended to the members of the Standing Committee during their two-day meeting in the state, and urged them to continue to support efforts by governments at all levels to secure the future for Nigerians by ensuring that the change vision is truly actualised
