FRSC Urges Prompt Response To Accident Victims
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has called on hospitals and medical service providers in the country to work toward prompt response to accident victims.
FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra State, Mr. Sunday Ajayi made the call when he visited Dr Lawrence Ikeako, Chief Medical Director, Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka yesterday. Ajayi said his visit was to familiarise and to appreciate the effectiveness of the hospital in ensuring that accident victims within the state were given the best medical attention possible.
He noted that accidents were bound to occur in spite of all precautions and regretted the increase in the number of crashes in Anambra.
Ajayi said this could also be because of the constructions going on in some portions of the road in the state’s corridor and the lack of patience on the part of drivers.
He bemoaned the loss of three lives on July 12 when trailers and a car had an accident and blamed it on drivers’ carelessness, especially while driving on unknown terrains.
“We are happy with the unhindered accidents and emergency access we enjoy in your hospital when crashes occur and we understand that at times your facilities can be overstretched.
“We must say that the body language of the government is that they are concerned about the safety of lives on the road and we hope they will continue to support you.
“But we must beg that the effectiveness be improved upon, we would like to see medical posts set up at strategic points so that rescuers during emergencies do not travel long distances,” he said.
Responding, Ikeako commended the efforts of the FRSC in Anambra, saying they were proactive in ensuring sane traffic.
He said that free flowing traffic would ensure that victims received attention promptly, and urged the commander to eliminate all cause of traffic jam, including the officers of the FRSC on patrol checks.
The former commissioner for health said the hospital was undergoing restructuring for enhanced service delivery, adding that more access gates were being created to ease entry into the hospital.
