Fight Against Potholes: We Provided Solution – Surveyor-General
The outgoing Surveyor-
General of Rivers State, Surveyor Gaius Assor has claimed that his department was the main brain behind the easy take off of the ongoing fight against zero potholes in the state.
Assor, said this at a public lecture organised in his honour by Young Surveyors Network (YSN) Nigeria Rivers State branch last Friday in Port Harcourt.
He hinted that on hearing the plans by the state government to eradicate potholes in the state, his department quickly swung into action and produced the map and handed it to the Ministry of Works.
Assor, said without such action, the take-off would not have been that prompt and smooth.
According to him, the explanation was based on the need to clarify the duties of a surveyor in the state and nation at large.
The outgoing surveyor-general, also tried to demarcate the functions of a surveyor from other sister professions, saying that surveyors are everywhere.
He also boasted that his profession was key to development, considering its nature of handling careful and delicate works.
While thanking the young surveyors for their gesture, he cautioned against unethical practices in order to maintain the standard of the profession.
In the lecture titled “A surveyor: you can’t miss “it” Surveyor Winston Ayeni, informed that the case of geospatial information was on the increase.
He noted that the information became necessary on the largest need to alert the young surveyors on upgrading.
Ayeni, who reacted to some questions raised at the end of his lecture, called on his young colleagues to ensure that they keep accurate measurement in all their dealings with the public, adding that a minor mistake by a surveyor may mare a whole system.
Earlier, the National Secretary, Young Surveyors Network, Surveyor Emmanuel Ajie had thanked surveyor Assor over his determination to add colour to their profession through hardwork and dedication to service, while calling on him not to deny them the opportunity of further benefiting from his wealth of experience.

Senate Orders NAFDAC To Ban Sachet Alcohol Production by December 2025 ………Lawmakers Warn of Health Crisis, Youth Addiction And Social Disorder From Cheap Liquor
The upper chamber’s resolution followed an exhaustive debate on a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South), during its sitting, last Thursday.
He warned that another extension would amount to a betrayal of public trust and a violation of Nigeria’s commitment to global health standards.
Ekpenyong said, “The harmful practice of putting alcohol in sachets makes it as easy to consume as sweets, even for children.
“It promotes addiction, impairs cognitive and psychomotor development and contributes to domestic violence, road accidents and other social vices.”
Senator Anthony Ani (Ebonyi South) said sachet-packaged alcohol had become a menace in communities and schools.
“These drinks are cheap, potent and easily accessible to minors. Every day we delay this ban, we endanger our children and destroy more futures,” he said.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, ruled in favour of the motion after what he described as a “sober and urgent debate”.
Akpabio said “Any motion that concerns saving lives is urgent. If we don’t stop this extension, more Nigerians, especially the youth, will continue to be harmed. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has spoken: by December 2025, sachet alcohol must become history.”
According to him, “This is not just about alcohol regulation. It is about safeguarding the mental and physical health of our people, protecting our children, and preserving the future of this nation.
“We cannot allow sachet alcohol to keep destroying lives under the guise of business.”
