Airline Engages Agents, Rewards Nigerian Customers
Ghana-based regional car
rier, Africa World Airlines (AWA) recently held a brand strategy and brainstorming meeting with top travel agents in an effort to further build its market share in the Nigerian air travel space and promote greater loyalty among its customers.
The event served as a platform for the airline to showcase its progress and successful performance since commencing operations on Accra-Lagos route on December 9, 2013.
The Airline’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Katherine-Lois Tosan Woode, thanked the agents for their support in the last one year and promised to work more closely with them going forward.
“We are working diligently with moré agents like you to improve our distribution channels, upgrade our online payment platforms, grow our route network and carry out robust marketing that will make us the airline of choice on the Lagos-Accra route,” said Woode.
She said that the airline’s prospects for growth are further boosted by the fact that AWA is currently one of the few African carriers undergoing the IATA operational Safety Audit (IOSA), which when completed would effectively position the airline for interlining and other partnerships thereby empowering the carrier to reach a wide range of destinations through a wide route network.
“This will no doubt, further ensure safety and reliability of schedules. AWA takes safety and reliability seriously. And in the last one year we had an On Time Performance (OTP) of 85 per cent,” she remarked.
As part of the airline’s strategy to encourage customers to fly with AWA and secure their loyalty, she disclosed that the carrier had launched a business traveller fare of four tickets purchased within six months and they get the fifth ticket absolutely free.
Another product on offer is the AWA School Fare which allows students to proceed beyond Accra to Kumasi at an attractive price.
“The AWA School Fare will resonate with our student passengers who have taken to the Ghana education system as a viable alternative to the international one.
Also, AWA is the airline of choice for traders and the oil and gas community because we can connect you direct from Lagos beyond Accra to Kumasi, Tamale and soon to Takoradi”, Woode noted.
According to her, in a bid to compensate for the size of its aircraft type, an Embrace (ERJ) 145, the CCO said WWA had introduced a new baggage allowance policy which allows passengers to check-in one free piece of 23 kilos plus a carry on bag of six Kilos, adding that two extra bags of 32 kilos each can also be checked in.
The air conducted on impromptu quiz session at the event with five free return tickets to Accra. Those who emerged as winners include Mr Donald Ullah of Rewards Travel Mr Sakar Bello, Jerry Bright Travel and Tours amongst others.
There was also a punctuality reward ticket which was presented to Mr Jaiyeola Patrick of HRG for being the earliest to arrive at the event.

Aviation Professionals Want Agencies Boards’ Inauguration
As a measure to curb corruption and restore accountability, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to push for the urgent formation and inauguration of governing boards for all other aviation agencies.
ANAP’s Secretary General, AbdulRasaq Saidu, made this call at the weekend when interacting with aviation correspondents, in reaction to recent inauguration of Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Keyamo had recently inaugurated the FAAN board, more than six months after its members were appointed by President Bola Tinubu, where Dr. Umar Ganduje was named Board Chairman, with FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, as the Vice Chairman.
Other board members include representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Tourism, and Aviation, as well as professionals from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, and FAAN’s legal department.
The ANAP scribe there urged the aviation Minister not to stop at FAAN but to ensure that all aviation parastatals are given functional boards to restore order and credibility to the sector.
He, however, commended Keyamo for recently inaugurating the board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria but stressed that more needed to be done.
Saidu also warned that the continued delay in constituting boards for other aviation agencies creates room for unchecked abuses, including illegal contracts, fraudulent employment practices, and mismanagement.
“The absence of governing boards violates the enabling Acts that established these agencies. Only properly constituted boards can enforce discipline, ensure due process in decision-making, and provide oversight to prevent corruption”, Saidu said.
He emphasised that the aviation unions, including ANAP, have consistently raised concerns about poor governance and lack of transparency within the aviation system.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly by appointing board members for all relevant agencies, in the interest of fairness and aviation safety.
Saidu also tackled the former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, for failing to inaugurate any boards during his eight-year tenure, despite appointments being made by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“ANAP raised the alarm several times under Sirika’s leadership, but nothing changed. That lapse has continued under the current administration, and it must be addressed now”, Saidu stated.
