Peterside Promises Better Welfare For Rivers Teachers
The All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State, Dr Dakuku Peterside on Saturday promised to address all issues concerning teachers’ welfare in the state.
Peterside gave the assurance in a meeting with Rivers State teachers at Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt.
According to him, my first year in office would ensure that teachers welfare is given maximum priority to motivate teachers in the state, If voted into power.”
Peterside, who promised to maintain the state of emergency on education introduced by Governor Amaechi’s administration, assured the teachers of modern facilities to ease teaching in the state.
The APC governorship candidate, who described Governor Amaechi’s policy on education as one of the best in West-Africa, promised to extend the existing modern boarding schools to all wards in the state.
He described himself as the son of a teacher, and promised to prepare teachers through training and retraining, prompt payment of salaries, regular promotion of teachers and provision of teachers housing scheme, especially for low grade teachers in the state.
Peterside who described teachers as the bedrock of any progressive society, expressed the need to treat teachers fairly and as first class professionals in the country.
He promised to encourage teachers with better teaching environment to promote education. Peterside also sought for the support of teachers for APC come March 28 and April 11 elections, assuring than of good relationship between his government and teachers in the state.
Speaking, the spokesman of the Rivers State teachers, Chief Geofrey Nwagwu commended Governor Amaechi for the keen attention to teachers and education in the state.
He also lauded Amaechi for taking the pain to make sure teachers salaries and allowances were paid regularly unlike some of his counterparts in other states.
Nwagwu, who expressed optimism that Peterside would be the next governor of the state come May 29, appealed to him to look into the few challenges facing them in promotion, lack of security and lack of incentive for teachers in the state.
The spokesman assured that at least, 90 per cent of teachers will vote APC come March 28 and April 11 general elections.
