Let Nigerians Decide
It is common knowledge that Nigeria will go to the
polls on Saturday 14thFebruary, 2015 to elect a President of their choice between 16 aspirants including the incumbent, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Other elections will follow for House of Assemblies, House of Representatives and the Senate on the 28th of February, 2015.
In many ways like the 2011 elections, Nigerians are expressing fear over words and actions of some notable players thereby over heating the already tensed state of affairs arising from the security threat of the Boko Haram sect; Kidnappings and Militant activities.
The formation of a parallel government by the APC as voiced by Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi if his party is not satisfied with the elections. The APC Chairman, Chief Oyegun and other Party stalwarts had to apologise for that statement.
Major General Mohammadu Buhari, had sworn that “if what happened in 2011 happens in 2015, both the Monkey and baboon will soak in blood”.
Even though there are many Political parties soliciting for the votes of the people, the activities of the prominent players being the APC and the PDP, have even attracted World Leaders like former United Nations Secretary General, Koffi Anan, who participated in a peace forum that culminated in the signing of an agreement to conduct themselves with decorum.
And most recently, the visit to the Presidential candidates of APC and PDP by the American Secretary of State, John Kerry . All in effort to ensure a peaceful, free and fair elections.
But most worrisome, is the anticipated post election violence like it happened in 2011 in which hundreds including Youth Corpers drafted to assist in the elections were killed or maimed by irate youths who were instigated because Mohammadu Buhari, lost the election.
Traces of intolerance of opposing views, parties and candidates have been manifesting in many ways and in different parts of the country especially in the North.
The burning of Two Goodluck Jonathan campaign vehicles in Jos, Plateau State and 4 in Niger State; Attack on the convoy of Mr. President campaign team in Katsina and Bauchi States as well as pulling down and tearing the campaign materials displayed. In the words of the Governor of Jigawa State, Dr. Lamido, “the fear of Buhari is beginning of electoral failure”.
He went on to elaborate on the threat in the North against the supporters of the PDP candidate Goodluck Jonathan, or any view outside of Mohammadu Buhari winning the Presidential race.
Some State Governors of the PDP have been sent death threats via sms for campaigning for Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election.
The Northern Emancipation Network said that millions of Nigerians in the North who express support for President Jonathan are constantly harassed sometimes with death threat.
They noted that not once have the Northern elders come out to speak in defence of the constitution. And they asked,”ARE WE NOT NIGERIANS? IS President JONATHAN NOT A NIGERIAN?”
We of the NIGERIA RENAISSANCE FORUM, rise in utter condemnation of these negative attributes of intolerance of opposing views or do or die politics that is becoming the hallmark of elections for political offices in our country.
Since Goodluck Ebele Jonathan ascended the Presidency, he has not been given a breather by those who either feel it is their birthright to rule and therefore threatened in 2011 that they were going to make the country ungovernable for him or those who feel he must consult them for every step in governance and obey their command at all times.
These past 3 years plus, have been for the government of President Goodluck Jonathan, like squeezing water from stone as they have made good their threat in fuelling insurgency in the land, denigrating the person of the President by their show of disrespect for the occupant of the office, campaign of calumny, badmouthing the achievements of the administration and all.
And in the guise to take power by hook or crook this time around, the opposition APC has continued to deny and lie against the achievements of the PDP led government of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. They have continued in the way of see and hear no good in the government.
The ground breaking and giant strides in Agriculture; Education; Health; Power; Roads; Aviation; Oil and Gas and the Rails. Others include: the Financial sector; Job Creation; Non-Oil Exports; Housing; Manufacturing; the Entertainment Industry; Information Communication Technology (ICT); The Rule of Law; Women Empowerment amongst others, make no difference to them even as they and their families relish and enjoy these dividends of the Jonathan administration since they live in this country.
Seeking the constitutionally allowed second term in office by Dr. Jonathan, is described by some as selfish ambition to stay glued to the Presidential seat.
Nigerians from all the six geo-political zones of our country are witnesses to the unbridled, humiliating and disrespectful treatment meted out to Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, as President of Nigeria by these Nigerians and we wish to state without equivocation that we have noted all the players and their activities. Someday, it will be the turn of the zone of those perpetuating these callous behavours and they should expect no less treatment.
For those who instigate trouble and their willing tools, we must warn that no one has monopoly of violence. Our advice is that Nigerians should endeavour to obtain their Permanent Voters Card, go to their Polling Centres and cast their votes for the candidate of their choice on Saturday 14th February, 2015 and the other elections.
Let Nigerians freely decide who they want to govern them without fear of harassment.
