Nigeria, Our Most Important Partner In Africa – US
The United States
Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle has described Nigeria as US most important partner in Africa.
The US Ambassador disclosed this in an interactive session on 2015 general election with students at the University of Port Harcourt.
The US Ambassador stated that Nigeria occupies a prime position in terms of bilateral relations in Africa, pointing out that Nigeria’s present Democratic transition was of utomost concern to the US and called on all stakeholders in the polity to play the game by the rules to ensure a peaceful transition.
Reflecting on the Civil Rights Movement in the US, James Entwistle said, black Americans made sacrifices to guarantee their voting rights, and emphasised that the right to vote was a civil obligation that needed to be defended tenaciously.
The US Ambassador called on the Nigeria political elite to adhere to the “Abuja Peace Accord” and domesticate it in the states and at the grassroots to secure the political future of the country.
He called on the Nigeria media to hold political office seekers to their promises and responsibilities toward accountability in leadership, and restated the commitment of the US Government towards the promotion of democratic ideals in Nigeria.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof Joseph Ajienka had commended the US Ambassador for the interactive youth session, stressing that the initiative portrayed the importance of the University to national development.
The Vice Chancellor used the opportunity to propagate a fledging relationship between UNIPORT and American Universities in exchange programmes and capacity development.
