RIVPoly Students Protest Additional Fee
Students of the Rivers
State Polytechnic, Bori, last Monday stormed major streets of Port Harcourt protesting what they called arbitrary surcharge by the management of the schools.
The protesting students which carried placards with varying inscription accused the school authority of imposing a compulsory payment of N21, 300 on all students as a punitive measure over the vandalisation of some school properties, by some irate students recently.
Speaking on behalf of the protesting students, the president of the National Association of Rivers South East Students worldwide, Comrade Yamaabana Legborsi, said the imposed fee was fraudulent and called on the RIV Poly management to rescind its decision, to enable students write their exams.
Comrade Legborsi, pointed out that it was unjustifiable for the entire Riv Poly students to pay for a crime perpetuated by a few students.
He also accused the chief security officer (C.S.O) of the school of instigating the crisis that erupted in the school leading to the destruction of properties and other important valuables and called for thorough investigation of the matter and prosecution of the culprits.
The student activists also cautioned against management’s interference in students union election at the Riv Poly.
He called on the Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi and civil liberty organizations to wade into the RIVPOLY crisis.
