NISA Plans Job Creation For Seafarers
The new President of the
embattled Nigerian Ship-owners Association (NISA), Capt. Niyi Labinjo has promised to create jobs for Nigerian Seafarers and ship brokers by ensuring that the jobs of Nigerian Shipowners that had been taken them.
Labinjo made the promise while fielding questions from journalists soon after the election in Apapa, Lagos last Friday.
He warned that foreigners who are contravening the provisions of the Cabotage Act and the Nigerian Content Act should have no business in the country, as his administration will take it as a priority to ensure that jobs meant for Nigerian Shipowners are duly given to them.
“We will get our jobs back and all the usurpers will leave our shores immediately, all the foreign usurpers that have taken over our jobs, this is a direct warning to them, they should start leaving the country”, he warned.
According to him, “I am the next officer of the watch, and my watch is the afternoon watch, the watch that is going out now is the morning watch. So I am an afternoon watch, you cannot because you are on watch the rest crew are not important, we all have to work together shoulder by shoulder, the next priority is to get our jobs back which we shall do immediately”.
The new President who was the immediate Past General Secretary of the association, however, assured to work with all government agencies and service providers at the Ports to ensure maximum success of the industry.
Labinjo assured that the moment Nigerian Shipowners start to have jobs, the seafarers and ship brokers will all have jobs and it would be a plus to the Nigerian Maritime Industry, and appealed for the co-operation and support of all stakeholders.
He noted that, “this is not Capt Labinjo, it is about all of us, the same way we have come here to vote today, we will go back to our various zones and make sure we deepen the implementation of the cabotage and the Nigerian Content Act”.
“There is no special approach than for us to shine our eyes, there is a new awareness, we are all going to our constituencies to ensure we get our jobs back”, the President posited.
In his remarks, one of the contenders to the office, Engr Greg Ogbeifun described the election as free and fair, promising to give the new President support, enjoining him to see if they could implement any part of his manifesto that they think they could work with to move the association forward.
