Let People Decide Who Governs Them -Lawmaker
Mr Ime Okon, member
representing Ibiono Ibom constituency in Akwa Ibom House of Assembly says democracy enables people to decide who governs them.
Okon said this in an interview with newsmen in Uyo while reacting to the current political situation in the state.
He said that politicians should abide by rules and regulations governing democracy as the forthcoming general elections were approaching.
The lawmaker, who is also the Chairman House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, said he would submit himself to his people for assessment.
He said that if his performance was acceptable to the people, they would give him a second mandate to represent them.
“I have decided to represent myself to my people to assess the mandate they gave me and revalidate me for another four years.
“I have desire to serve my people again if they send me. Power belongs to the people.
“I know some other people have collected forms to contest for the same position; they are my fellow aspirants not opponents, the people will decide whom they want since all of us have the right to contest.’’
According to him, some people called him and asked him to return to the parliament since he has performed well.
Okon explained that he was able to restore peace in his constituency, adding without peace there would be no meaningful development.
He said, “I am not interested in power, but in serving my people. So I do not struggle over power but serving my people.
“I have also tried to be accessible to my people; there has been no disconnect with my people since I was elected. My people have unfettered access to me.”
The legislator said that beyond peace and accessibility, he also empowered 50 indigenes of Ibiono Ibom with learning skills to improve their living standard.
He explained that all of them had graduated and equipped with starter packs to improve their economic capacity and add value to their lives.
The lawmaker added that within the last four years, he sponsored quiz competitions for nursery, primary and secondary schools in the constituency..
”I have also keyed into free education policy of this administration by sponsoring Ime Okon quiz competition for three years now.
