Trucks Dump 30 Tonnes Of Waste Daily At FCT
Waste collection trucks
dump 30 tonnes of waste daily at dumpsites in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja,
Alhaji Babashehu Lawan, Acting Director, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), in Abuja made this known in an interview with newsmen
He said that additional two dumpsites were created in Bwari council area to be able to accommodate the volume of waste.
The director said that much pressure on the old dumpsite informed the creation of the Bwari dumpsites and commended the Satellite Town Development Agency (STDA) for supporting the board in addressing inadequate dumpsites in the city.
He said that that no fewer than 70 trucks went round the city daily twice to collect waste, noting that inadequate dumpsites had been hindering the services before the creation of the additional dumpsites.
The acting director also noted that some plazas and commercial areas within the city were lacking waste bins, regretted that this could result in indiscriminate waste disposal.
He said that the Environmental Health Officers (EHO) were set to enforce the AEPB Act which stipulated that every household must own a waste bin.
“The EHO will start charging them for dumping refuses anyhow.“We have given them three days’ notice to get their own waste bins.”
Lawan said that 24 magistrate courts in the FCT were working with the board to prosecute defaulters of environmental regulations.
He advised residents who could not afford the cost of waste bins to buy garbage bags.
“In a city such as Abuja, we can’t condone a situation where people dump their wastes on the ground and would not even buy garbage bags.“You are advised to buy garbage bags and tie your refuse properly for easy dropping in the pale loader.”
According to him, the AEPB on its part had made available waste bins of global standards.
