Shun Illegal Bunkering, Ogoni Youth Told
A coalition of non-governmental organizations has called on Ogoni youths in Rivers State, to shun illegal oil bunkering and pipeline vandalization in order to protect their environment.
The NGOs, comprising the National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spills in Niger Delta (NCGFOSND), National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment made this call during a joint awareness campaign against oil spill in Bomu community, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Director-General of NOSDRA, Peter Idabor, cautioned the youths to look for other legitimate means of earning a living rather than getting themselves involved in illegal bunkering.
Represented at the event by NOSDRA’s Principal Environmental Scientist, Melvis Odobo, the director general explained that the destruction of pipelines and illegal bunkering could lead to oil spill.
He pointed out that oil spillage had its consequences on both the environment and the people living in it, identifying one of the negative effects of pollution cancer to the body.
“We are appealing that it is necessary for you to shun any act that may lead to oil spill. When oil is released into the water or to the earth, it could cause harm to the environment,” the NOSDRA boss emphasized.
Pointing out that crude oil contains carcinogen substances, which may cause cancer to the body, Idabor listed other consequences of oil spill as destruction of farmland, fire outbreak, destruction of aquatic lives etc.
He, however, stated that apart from pipeline vandalization and oil bunkering, pipeline corrosion, accident and equipment failure could also lead to oil spill.
In his remarks, the representative of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, Mr. Chukwu Harrison, advised participants that all cases of spillage and bunkering activities should be reported to the ministry and other relevant authorities.
Harrison also warned against the scooping of crude oil during spillage, building or doing business on oil pipelines and using crude oil for domestic purposes, maintaining that using crude oil for the wrong purpose could be disastrous.
The Paramount Ruler of Bomu community, His Royal Highness, Mene C.N. Tenalo, expressed gratitude to NACGOND, NOSDRA and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment for organizing the campaign against oil spill in his area.
Tenalo promised to join hands with them (NGOs) in sensitizing the people of the community on the dangers of oil spill and how to take precautionary measures against it.
