23 local government councils in Rivers State have resolved to partner with the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) in its skills acquisition programmes for the youth in the state.
A cross section of the caretaker chairmen who spoke at the one-day capacity building and empowerment workshop in Port Harcourt, said that the programme at the Workmanship Technical Training Centre (WTTC), Bori would help to check capital flight from the state.
The caretaker chairman of Emohua Local Government Council, Hon Godstime Orlukwu said that his council will use the opportunity provided by the agency to train some of its youth at the WTTC.
Hon. Orlukwu said that the programme is in line with the policy of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to impart skills to the youths of the state.
Also speaking, the caretaker chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Dr. Lawrence Chuku described the programme as laudable, stressing that the situation would go a long way to empower the youth and alleviate poverty.
Dr. Chuku who described the programme as second to none added that Obio/Akpor LGA will key into the programme without further delay.
He said that although the council was pursuing similar skills acquisition programme, the training in WTTC is reasonably more advanced as the centre has an international pedigree and certification and promised to train 17 persons at the centre.
Also speaking, chairman, Bonny LGA Caretaker Committee, Hon Adonye Wilcox said that the council will train seven of its youth at the centre.
Earlier, the General Manager, Business Development and Job Creation, RSSDA, Mrs. Blessing Daniel Kalio had said that the programme was to enlighten council chairmen on the need for partnership on skills acquisition.
