…Rescues 11 Crew Men From Towing Barge
Eleven crew members
of an ill-fated tug-towing barge, MB Mark Ben were rescued to Port Harcourt when their boat cracked at Osari Platform, Mobil oil field in Akwa-Ibom, by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Eastern Zone on Friday.
Briefing newsmen in his office on the rescue mission, the Zonal Co-ordinator of NIMASA, Mr Anthony Ogadi, said a distress call was received on October 2, 2014, at about 2020 hours, that a tug towing barge had developed cracks and the lives of the crew members are in danger.
On receiving the call, Ogadi said a boat, NIMASA Oweikenigha was immediately dispatched from NPA Jetty at Bonny with 16 crew members on board for the rescue mission..
According to him, the rescue team on arrival at the location at about 0400 hours on October 3, 2014, assisted in the evacuation of the distressed eleven crew members of the cracked boat.
He said five of the crew members of the barge have been currently brought ashore for onward Journey and hand-over to the management of their company at their base at Solution Mark Nig Ltd, old Refining Road, Port Harcourt.
Ogadi disclosed that the remaining six crew are left to salvage and assist the tug-boat, Mr Julie to tow the distressed barge to their base.
The co-ordinator gave the names of the rescued crew members of the ill-fated tug towing barge by NIMASA as Denn’s Ayogu, Felix Kelechi Sunday, Emma Monday, Williams Titus and Charles Frank, a cadet, while the ones rescue by the tug boat MV Julie are Jumbo Ignatius the captain, Julius Igho Chief Engineer, Samuel Mark second Engineer, Samuel Oppong, Ezekiel Irunmu and Sunday Chika Parker the electrician.
One of the victims, Felix Sunday, an oiler, who spoke with The Tide correspondent thanked God and NIMASA for saving their lives, while it was gathered that as soon as the crew members were rescued, the distressed barge split into two.
Meanwhile, the Zonal Co-ordinator of NIMASA, Eastern Zone, Mr Ogadi, had advised boat operators to be careful and safety conscious, especially non-commercial craft users by ensuring that the lives of their passengers are not endangered and also provide life jackets to them always.
He also called on stakeholders to ensure that their crafts are in order and adhere to safety regulations by ensuring that their vessels are sea worthy.
