Customs Harps On ICT Use Against Insurgency
The Nigeria Custom Ser
vice (NCS) has called on the Federal Government to consider the effective use of international communication Technology (ICT)in intelligence surveillance in its bid to fight insurgency in the country.
A top NCS, officer who pleaded anonymity said this at the just concluded 25th National Conference and 47th Annual General Meeting of the service in Enugu State.
The officer, said ICT was an enabler of growth and national development and as also, the highest employer of Labour.
Based on the above argument, he noted that governments at all levels could reach out to the citizens via the medium (ICT) as to secure them against criminal activities in the country.
According to him, the best thing to do now, was to educate all stakeholders on the need to form a strong force in the transformation of the nation from information society to a knowledge based economy.
He explained that the economy would strive on the production and dissemination of ideas.
The cartoon officer, also called for a concerted investment in knowledge production via ICT, should the country want to get it right in the area of insurgency.
The Tide, gathered that this requires urgent domestication and localisation of Nigeria policy vertically through the various tiers of government across various ministries and departments in conjunction with IT professionals and practitioners.
The command, also lauded the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and others over their commitment through the deployment of ICT for information dissemination and other opportunities.
It would be recalled that some experts in the country, including a Port Harcourt based NGO, have before now, suggested the case of ICT as the best option to tackle insecurity in the country.
