May Day: NLC Explains Action At Andoni
The Andoni Local Gov
ernment branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has blamed the hijack of the May Day celebration by non-labour officials on the poor workers’ day response in the area.
The local government chairman of the NLC, Chief Okwa P.G Atu said in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt that the union had to call off the celebration in the area as a protest against the interference of the local government council in the May Day rally which was a purely labour affair.
According to him, rather than liaise with the local branch of the NLC for the May Day celebration, the local government set up a committee of non-labour members with the head of local government administration as the chairman, adding that the committee failed to provide the necessary logistics for the celebration.
Also speaking, the secretary of the congress in the area, Chief-elect Samuel C. Owurong said it was the responsibility of labour unions to organise the May Day celebrations with government assistance. A senior health officer and regular participant at May Day rallies in the area who spoke under condition of anonymity said that the May Day rally did not hold in the area, adding that labour leaders addressed the workers and dismissed them.
In his reaction, the Director of Media, Andoni Local Government Council, Mr Solomon Parakom denied the allegation, stating that labour unions were effectively mobilised by the council for the rally.
He said that the rally had the Vice Chairman of the local government council, Hon Sampson G. Egop in attendance.
