Poor Sex Education: Threat To Girls’ Future
Parents are the biological
or legal owners of children. Unfortunately, most parents shy away from discussing certain subject matter with their children like safe sex. Discussions that border on sex are considered a taboo between parents and children.
The inability of parents to tell their young girls what they need to know about sex has led many young girls into unprepared motherhood condition. While some have become victims of sexually transmitted disease. This is so because children who are less informed about sex education could engage in unhealthy sexual relationship which results in pregnancy when such child is not emotionally mature and prepared for maternal responsibilities.
More so, such pregnant child could suffer depression and start staying within close doors instead of mixing up with other individuals thereby suffering shame and stigmatization which may lead her to negative thinking, a corroboration of Durkheim’s argument that “being socially isolated was a key antecedent to suicide”, this in a way affect the newly born child as he or she grows up, bound to suffer poor maternal and paternal care and some forms of depression.
Most parents may think that such discussion with their children on proper use of condoms would encourage the children to have sex. On the contrary, whether parents communicate with their children on sex education or not, would not stop them from engaging in sexual relationship if they so desire.
Parents should endeavour to communicate with their children on regular basis because parents are the mother of nature and not peers. How safe and bold a child feels during communication on sensitive top like safe sex depends on how regular this confidence is sustained from infancy. Frequent and effective communication between parents and children could enhance confidence and bonding between them.
Once again, communication gains beauty when conviction is derived as an end product by the children concerned due to their questions answered by their parents to their conviction. The efficacy of communication can be accessed by the level of conviction gained during and after communication.
Hence, Wilbur Schram (1954) indicated that we should also examine the desired and undesired impact on the target of the message.
Both parents and children should endeavour to enhance their knowledge on sex education knowing that accessing knowledge is not costly in this jet age. It is therefore, important that children should usurp the opportunity provided by the computer to browse the needed knowledge on sex education as well as through their smart phones since it does not cost much money.
Adult children within the ages of Eighteen years and above could visit health officers like doctors, nurses and pharmacists than die in silence.
It becomes imperative, that parents and children should attend seminars on sex education on health matters. Retired and practicing doctors should organise more seminars on sex education and health matters as this will curb future dangers like unwanted pregnancy, sex abuse and so on.
