Implications Of The Easter
This season, Christendom is celebrating Easter, a period set aside to mark the highest point of the Christian faith. Of course, if Jesus Christ did not agree to carry the sins of mankind and endure rejection and the cross, suffer death before resurrecting, there would be no Christianity.
A great percentage of the world comprise of Christians, but all they hear in this season is how and why Christ died an innocent death. All they remember once in a year are the ruthlessness of the Roman Government of that day and the hypocrisy of the people of God. For many, it’s an opportunity to embark on an emotional trip, while for others it’s another opportunity for holidaying and celebrating.
For a great mass of Christendom, Easter ends tomorrow and its back to business as usual. The significance of the death of Christ is hardly understood and the implication of that sacrifice is lost. But Easter is not just a story, it’s not just a passion for Christ, it’s not for the people of old, it is even more relevant in our time.
It is true that by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the salvation of all men that are willing and believe have been assured. But it also leaves an example that people religiously avoid. God loved and gave His son as ransom; Jesus loved and died for many; who is willing to love, what are we willing to give?
Our country is largely Christian, but it has come to be known for nearly all the wrong reasons. Easter is a demonstration of love, sacrifice, covenant, patience, endurance and standing in the gap for others. But these are about the most invisible qualities in our individual and national lives.
While many people may be quick to condemn Boko Haram and their sponsors, those in the Christian folds cannot claim to have done better. In the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, he once asked those who had not sinned to cast the first stone. The response shocked the world.
Those who know their Bible can also remember that mankind sinned and acquired the death sentence, but while the world was still in that state, God sent His son to die for her. No other reason than love, no other condition but believe and receive.
Today, even husbands and wives have difficulty forgiving each other. Today people prefer to deprive others, even bleed them to death instead of sharing. Today, people fight to the death over earthly possessions, even patches of land. Today, people still accuse other persons falsely and enjoy the pains of others.
The wickedness of human beings can no longer be listed, in fact they have no reason calling themselves Christians. There is nothing in them or about them that comes from Jesus Christ. But He still loves and forgives and blesses. What a God!
The implication of Easter is that believers have become new creatures. They have become their brothers’ keepers. They now hear God as He says, “love your neighbours that the world might know that you are my disciples.” Easter should make us to subject every of our word and action to the example of Jesus Christ.
Of course, it will not be easy, it was not easy for Christ either, but because of the goal, the covenant he had with His father, He endured the cross. Any Christian that fails to acquire the fruit of the spirit will not be prepared to face and overcome the devil, which Christ himself warned people against before He was arrested.
The least any believer can do is to keep the family intact no matter what, as well as love man and country. No more should Nigeria have the largest economy in Africa and also have the highest number of poor persons, it’s an irony, a sacrilege and a recipe for crisis.
The Christian should pray and do everything he can to stop Boko Haram and other militia activities in the land. The Christian must join politics and sanitise it and take Jesus to the governance of His people. The Christian must ensure that 2015 general election was safe and credible.
Christianity is not a social title; it’s not a cover for cowards, lazy and selfish people. Christians must be known by their conduct not public prayers’ they must stand against evil in the church, at work, at school and play. This is when Easter gets a true meaning.
