Former NIPR President Tasks Nigerians On Sustainable Peace
The Former National Presi
dent of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Mr Bobo Sofiri Brown, has advocated for stakeholders’ intervention in guaranteeing the peace and stability of the county.
Speaking on the role of the media in achieving sustainable peace in Nigeria at a media night organized by the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, GRA, Mr Brown said that the earlier the government recognized the concept of stakeholder, in peace building, the better for the country.
According to him, the present situation in the country had underscored the need for stakeholders to rise up and champion the cause for social justice.
He decried the continuous neglect of the rural areas in terms of siting of projects, stressing that the situation has made some ethnic groups to lose their natural identities, thereby creating the opportunities for violence across the Niger Delta.
The former NIPR president said that until politicians see the need to channel the resource of the Niger Delta for the establishment of industries in the rural areas, the region would remain prone to violent activities.
He commended the Rotary club of Port Harcourt GRA for its Einstein Science competition programme and urged the club to constitute itself into powerful stakeholder to ensure sustainable peace in the region.
Contributing to the lecture, the General Manager of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation (RSNC), Mr Celestine Ogolo, urged Nigerian media to work hard to ensure the indivisibility of the country even after the 2015 general elections.
Mr Ogolo, who identified power sharing, religion, resources control, as some of the issues threatening the peace of the country said that the media must de-emphasize these issues for the peace of the country.
The President, Rotary club of Port Harcourt GRA, Miss Medline Tador, said that the Rotary media month was organized annually by the club to draw attention to some salient issues in the society.
