The Senate will today, consider the request of President Goodluck Jonathan for it to confirm the appointment of Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa as President, Court of Appeal.
The Senate will also consider the request of the President to confirm Mr Godwin Emefiele for appointment as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Senate President, David Mark, announced this yesterday during plenary following the approval of senators that the appointment of the two nominees’ be considered and confirmed by the Committee of the Whole House.
Presenting Jonathan’s request to the senate, the leader of the Senate, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba (PDP-Cross River), said the request to confirm Bulkachuwa was in accordance with section 238(1) of the 1999 constitution.
He added that that of Emefiele was in line with section 81(1) and (2) of the CBN Act 2007.
Jonathan had on February 20, forwarded the name of Emefiele to the Senate for consideration and confirmation as the new CBN Governor to take over from Mr Sanusi Lamido Sanusi whose tenure expires in June.
Sanusi is currently on suspension for alleged financial misconduct amongst several other allegations.
On March 19, the President forwarded the name of Bulkachuwa to the Senate for confirmation as the new president of the Court of Appeal.
However, the Senate forwarded the president’s request for confirmation of Mr Adelabu Adekola for appointment as CBN deputy governor to its committee on Banking and Currency for consideration.
Briefing newsmen after plenary, spokesman of the Senate, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia) said there was nothing unconstitutional about screening Emefiele before the expiration of Sanusi’s tenure.
“There is nothing in the constitution that says we should screen the new person only after the tenure of the incumbent.
“In fact, good sense means that we should screen the new person and go through all the processes so that on the day the tenure of the incumbent ends, he can handover to his successor.
Stressing that there was no need for the Senate to allow a lacuna in the process, Abaribe said the screening would be televised live.
Meanwhile, Mark has directed the various committees in the Upper Legislative Chamber to submit their budget to the Appropriation Committee latest by today.
Mark, who gave the directive during plenary, warned that if any committee fails to meet today’s deadline, the Senate would be compelled to pass the budget estimates as presented by the executive.
