NIPOST To Extend Modern Services To Rural Communities
Director, Nigerian Postal
Institute (NPI), Mr Imma Diwa, said on Tuesday that the institute was planning to extend its modern postal services to the rural areas.
Diwa told newsmen in Lagos that this was part of its efforts to meet the demands of its customers.
“What we are doing now is to bridge the gap between the served and the under-served areas, so that every community can benefit from modern postal services,’’ he said.
According to him, the programme is initiated by the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to take the services to the grassroots.
He said only a few people in the rural areas could afford to send mails through the international courier companies.
Diwa said internet-enabled computers would be distributed to the local government areas for residents in the rural areas to access the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST)’s new product called the financial inclusion programme.
He said customers who were computer literate and internet-compliant could surf the internet in NIPOST offices nationwide.
Diwa said that in the past, rural areas had not been enjoying quality postal service delivery due to challenges that were beyond NIPOST.
He said this was because only a few people in the rural areas could afford to send their mails through the international courier companies.
The director said NIPOST had the widest reach and spread among the agencies registered for carrying and distributing mails and parcels in the country.
NIPOST had the spread and that could go to the hinterlands, no matter how remote, to deliver mails we are trying to reduce the time factor to promote efficiency,’’ he said.
Diwa disclosed that the target of NIPOST was to deliver mails to any part of the country within 72 hours.
It usually lasted more days in the riverine areas and in the desert because of the terrain, he added.
