Don Seeks Establishment Of Soil Science Institute
The National President of
Soil Science Society of Nigeria, Prof. Victor Chude, has called for the establishment of an institute of soil science in the country.
Chude, a professor of Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, made the call during interview with newsmen in Uyo.
Chude said when established, the institute would serve as a professional body for soil scientists, agronomists, geologists, environmentalists, geographers and ecologists.
He said the institute would also attract young ones into the profession, adding that the number of school leavers aspiring to study soil science in Nigerian universities was low.
“When established, the institute will prescribe and regulate the standards of academic qualifications and practical skills to be attained by persons seeking to become registered members.
“It will advise and encourage the enactment and enforcement of laws that will guarantee efficient production and consistent supply of high quality food to Nigerians.
“It will ensure that soil science practitioners in Nigeria uphold the ethics of the profession and guarantee the sustainability of high soil”, he said.
The national president added that the institute would be empowered to accredit laboratories and soil science courses in all the nation’s tertiary institutions.
Chude, however, said that despite the non-absence of the institute, the society had contributed immensely to the soil policy formulation of the government.
He said some soil scientists were members of the committee and sub-committees when the nation’s agricultural policy was formulated.
“At the end of our annual conferences, we always come up with recommendations to advise government on best ways to address issues related to soil management and fertility in the country”, he said.
He said the vibrancy and future of soil science largely depended on the ability to deliver a new generation of well-trained soil scientists.
He added that the education of students on soil should start from the primary to secondary schools before the higher institutions.
