Minister Tasks Telecom Operators On More Base Stations
The Minister of
Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, has in Abuja urged telecom operators to deploy more Base Transreceiver Stations (BTS) across the country.
Johnson gave the advice at the ongoing 11th Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) Forum in Abuja with the theme: ‘’Innovation Through Broadband’’.
She said that deployment of more base stations would ensure that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services got to every part of the country.
“Significantly, more base stations need to be deployed across the country to meet our national target of a five-fold increase in broadband penetration by 2018.
“The often cited statistic of broadband-enabled Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth says that a 10 per cent increase in broadband penetration can result in a 1.38 per cent increase in GDP.”
She said a significant communications infrastructure gap existed in Nigeria and that the most pressing priority of the Nation’s Broadband Strategy/Plan was how to fill it.
Johnson said there were indications that the number of base stations in Nigeria had increased exponentially since the inception of Global System for Mobile communications (GSM).
She said that the figure increased from 116 in 2001 to about 21,000 by 2010.
Omobola also said that the pace of growth had, however, slowed even as some existing base stations had been decommissioned as a result of terror attacks, theft and vandalism.
She said that the Federal Government had been promoting broadband deployment and technology innovation in the country.
According to her, the government has been enabling the much needed investment to come into the ICT sector so that Nigeria can build the infrastructure required to provide connectivity.
She said that this year’s CTO Forum had focused on how to expand connectivity and make it accessible and affordable to the increasing proportion of the world’s population.
