Okrika Wins Best LG Award
Despite being suspended twice from office, the Okrika Local Government Council Chairman, Barrister Tamuno Williams has won the Excellence in Local Government Initiative (ELGI) competition of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA).
The chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area, Hon Felix Nwaeke emerged the first runner-up, while Dame Maureen Tamuno of Ogu/Bolo came third.
The Okrika chairman had earlier won trophies in rural electrification category and local content.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government has charged local government councils to sustain its vision of rural transformation.
The state Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi who gave the charge during the ELGI 2012 award night in Port Harcourt, said that local government councils must ensure that their vision of infrastructural development did not fail.
The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Social Development and Rehabilitation, Mr Joe Poroma urged council chairmen to sustain close ties with the state government with a view to extending the governor’s vision to the rural areas.
Also speaking, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr Bert Ronham urged Rivers people to be proud of the programme as it would engender transparency and accountability in the governance of rural areas.
Ambassador Ronham said that his mission was to report to his government on what he had seen in Rivers State, noting that the vision must not be allowed to die.
The Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Hon Samuel Eyiba said that the programme would engender healthy competition among local government councils in the state.
Mr Eyiba said that the programme was intiated by RSSDA and the ministry to bring about good governance in the local government areas.
Earlier, the Executive Director of RSSDA, Mr Noble Pepple had said that the programme was made up of two components which include capacity building and performance assessment.
