CSOs Seek Implementation Of Voluntary Principles
The Civil Society Organisations and the media in Bayelsa State have reiterated the need for Federal Government to explain the reasons behind the delay in the implementation of Voluntary Principles.
This was made known in a communiqué raised at the end of a two-day awareness workshop on Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPs) organised by the Global Rights in conjunction with the Women Initiative for Transparency and Social Justice (WITSOJ) in Bayelsa State.
The communiqué which was made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt said that the nation has delayed signing on for 12 years now, adding that the citizens have the right to know why.
The workshop that was attended by the representatives of 33 groups, noted that implementation of voluntary principles remains the best way to prevent human rights abuses from ensuing from the security arrangement of extractive industries.
CSOs and the media will continue to engage the government of Nigeria and extractive companies operating therein to speedily adopt and implement the VPs.
“Security is the responsibility of everyone, it must be democratised and extractive companies, host communities and all relevant stakeholders must participate in decision making process concerning security arrangement especially in deployment and conduct of security officials”, it noted.
According to the participants, the VPs have the potential to foster harmonious and mutual beneficial relationship between extractive companies and the host communities.
They also called on the Bayelsa State government to sign on to Voluntary Principles as observers, saying that this would solve the security problems of the state.
