RSG Unveils Two New Fire Stations, Soon
Plans are underway by the Rivers State Ministry of Special Duties to unveil two new fire stations at Borokiri and Rumuodomanya in Port Harcourt.
Commissioner for Special Duties, Barrister Dickson Umunakwe gave the indication in a chat with newsmen recently at his office in Port Harcourt.
He also disclosed plans to complete construction of fire stations in Degema and Ahoada so as to reduce response time to fire outbreaks in the outskirts.
Barrister Umunakwe revealed that work at the two fire stations had reached advanced stages, and that in few month, they will be put to use.
“As we finish procurring, or refurbishing, we will send our trucks to these areas,” he said.
Aside that, he stated that the ministry was planning to build more water hydrants in different parts of the city in order to enhance response to fire, lamenting that the problem of water accessibility had hampered operations.
He decried the attitude of some members of the public who attack fire men but said currently, security had been deployed to protect them during operations.
To enhance performance of personnel, he stated that training and re-training programmes had begun, “ we will train our drivers, mechanics. They will go for courses. Already we have offers locally and internationally”, he said.
