‘Use Agriculture To Tackle Light Unemployment’
A former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mr Abiodun Ogunleye, has advised the Federal Government to promote agriculture, through better funding, to tackle unemployment in the country.
Ogunleye gave the advice recently in Lagos, at the fourth edition of a free computer training programme organized for youths in the area by a state lawmaker, Mr. Sanai Agunbiade.
Ogunleye said that agriculture could be the largest employer of labour in the country, adding that the neglect of the sector by successive governments had contributed to the economic woes currently experienced in the country.
“’When a country that has large scale arable land cannot feed itself, it is a big shame and calls for urgent attention,’’ he said.
The former deputy governor under the Tinubu administration, said that agriculture would have to take the “centre stage’’ to eventually eradicate poverty in Nigeria.
He commended the lawmaker for the annual programme, which according to him, was to empower youths in Ikorodu and its environs.
‘’It takes a person of vision to come up with this kind of laudable programme. I can emphatically say that S.O.B. has done exceptionally well,’’ he said.
Earlier, Agunbiade (ACN-Ikorodu I), said that he initiated the programme because he now enjoyed some privileges which could not have been possible if he had not been elected by his people.
‘’ A commitment I made is that as long as I represent you as a lawmaker, this programme would continue to be there for the benefit of our people.
‘’Information technology is dominating the world, so this offers you the opportunity to be well equipped to face modern day challenges,’’ he said.
The Tide reports that a total of 150 students from Ikorodu will benefit from the free training programme.
Mr. Taiwo Hassan, one of the beneficiaries, commended the lawmakers for giving youths in the area the opportunity to acquire skill in computer appreciation.

FG, Ogun Distribute Inputs To 2,400 Farmers
Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, distributed farm inputs to farmers as part of effort to address food security challenge.
The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
Owotomo said: “Let us make good use of this opportunity, so that the success of this phase will make farmers benefit more from the state and federal governments of Nigeria.”
Earlier, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ayo-Ajayi, appreciated the present administration for partnering with the federal government for the initiative, adding that the programme is designed to support farmers at the grassroots level in cassava, rice and maize with inputs such as, seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, to boost their production and enhance their livelihood.
