AD Gives Jonathan Pass Mark

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) yesterday gave President Goodluck Jonathan a pass mark on the implementation of Federal Government’s projects in promoting dividends of democracy in the country.

This is contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Mr Rafiu Salau, in Abuja. “It is the first government that has shown interest in cleaning the fraud in the oil and gas industry, the main source of revenue generation of the nation. “Government can stop the corruption in the industry in order to have the revenue that the industry can give the nation.

“Also, government policy to find solution to subsidy is in the right direction,” it said.

According to the party, the nation can build the capacity to refine and market enough petroleum products for West African countries. The party said that the Federal Government’s plan in 2013 to introduce single digit interest rate on agricultural loan was commendable.

“It is one of the strategies that will create not only jobs but also industrial raw materials for many industries facing high cost of importation of raw materials.

“In addition, the nation will be able to feed itself and save its foreign exchange that is used to import food. “To stop the past experience of waste of agricultural products, the single digit interest rate on loan should be extended to manufacturing sector so that the produce can be processed into industrial materials,” it said. The party maintained that this would not only increase agricultural produce but also improve outputs for value added programmes.

It said that the government had planned to register all the unemployed in 2013. “This will give a genuine data of the unemployed which will also show the capacity of the nation’s labour force.

“Henceforth, every government will be appraised by the employment rate,” it said. The party said that the Federal Government was in the right direction. It further commended the National Assembly for passing the 2013 appropriation bill before the end of the year. AD said that this would give government enough time to execute the budget that would provide dividends of democracy to the people.

The party expressed concern over the decline in the quality of education, pointing out that the solution was to concentrate on the teaching standards.

“The government has to encourage the best hands into the teaching profession and there should be no more compromise of quality of teachers,” the party said. It said that the nation needed a civil service system with higher productivity. The recurrent expenditure of the budget should not be more than 30 per cent,” the party said.

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style. A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.
