CBN Slams Banks …Over Dirty Naira Notes
Authorities of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have blamed commercial banks for being responsible for increasing volume of dirty, torn and rough currency notes in circulation in the country.
CBN, Port Harcourt branch Controller, Mr Ken Effa gave the indication when House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Currency visited his office in Port Harcourt, recently.
The CBN boss while answering questions from members of the committee said commercial banks have not been keen on demanding for fresh mints as they preferred to evade the deposits required upon asking for the mints.
According to Mr Effa, commercial banks continued to manage dirty notes for mints adding that the situation had become so pronounced that the CBN now penalized the banks for sorting when the commercial banks brought huge supply of dirty notes but regretted that ‘even at that, the commercial banks are not moved by the penalty.”
The CBN boss further attributed scarcity of fresh mints in circulation to the tendency of wealthy Nigerians to swap dirty notes for fresh mints the moment it is released saying they have banks in their homes where they stored the mints.
Earlier, chairman of the House Committee on Banking and Currency, Hon. Jones Onyereri had enquired from the branch controller why huge sacks of fresh bank notes were abundant at the Nigerian Minting Company where they previously visited only for fresh currency to be scare in the banks and elsewhere.
However, the House Committee lauded the ability of the branch to meet 90 per cent of targeted agric loans and recovering over N180 million almost all the 2011 issues.
Hon Onyereri said the delegation found the Port Harcourt branch of the CBN offices to be well ordered, neat and very suitable for business operations.
He remarked that the workforce led by its managers appeared smart and competent and meeting of high targets with high performance scores by latest internal assessment despite some challenges.
The committee particularly lauded the branch controller when it was shown, some strategic initiatives deployed by the branch to overcome some challenges.
The visit, Hon Onyereri said was part of the oversight functions of the House to ensure that operations justified the investment in the apex bank and to strengthen areas that needed help through fresh legislation to make it better.
