Lawmaker Harps On Collective Responsibility
The Chairman of the House committee on Local Government in
Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Lucky Odili, has reiterated the need for
all stakeholders to see governance as a partnership with collective roles
geared towards bettering the lives of the people and leaving the society
better.
Hon. Odili made the clarification in Opobo town,
headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro Local government area, recently when he led members
of his committee on a familiarisation tour of the area.
The House Committee members reiterated the purpose of their
visit which included looking at the books of the council to see how budgets are
implemented, to encourage councillors to serve the people well, they advised
them to ensure that after the passage of any budget, they supervise its strict
implementation, as well as look at the minutes of F&GPC meetings of the council,
even as they go to see projects executed by the council.
The House Committee Chairman, who lauded the cordial
relationship among the arms of government in the area called on civil servants
of the council not to mislead the politicians but to use their experience to
help and mould democracy into better and effective democracy.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro local government
council, Hon Maclean Bethel Uranta, who was full of gratitude for the visit
said that the tour will not only strengthen the synergy between the state and
the area, but will also highlight the grey areas of the council for necessary
adjustment.
Hon Uranta decried the negligence of multi national
companies like ASCON, Shell, Total E&P, and called on the authorities to
see that these companies operating in the area, fulfil their statutorly
requirement for the people, to avert any possible breach of the law by youths
of the area.
In his speech, the Leader of the Legislative Assembly of the
area, Hon Anengi Godswill Fubara, said there is an existing cordial
relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of the council.
He said the councillors have already passed three bills this
current legislative year, adding that the cordiality has never stopped the
councillors from pointing out and correcting areas that need to be corrected in
the activities and programmes of the executive arm.
