Rivers Co-operatives Promise Job Creation
Sequel to the declaration of this year as the International
Year of Cooperatives (IYC) by the United Nations, the Rivers State Cooperative
Federation, says it will not relent in the areas of job creation and poverty
reduction.
According to a statement signed by the President, Rivers
Cooperative Federation Limited, Mr. Victor Alasia in Port Harcourt, the UN 2012
IYC is saddled with the task to raise awareness on cooperative in
socio-economic development and to promote its formation.
He noted that growth and strength through supportive
environment, access to finance, investment in rural infrastructure and
institutional strengthening will be considered by the congress.
The Rivers cooperative boss, noted that action will be taken
towards establishing mechanism for the observance of the IYCs.
The statement added that members will be encouraged to
form cooperative movements to showcase
the products of their enterprises as evidence of its relevance in the
socio-economic development.
According to him, the International Cooperative Alliance
(ICA) global President, Dame Pauline Green, described as ironic the presence of
cooperatives in all aspects of life, adding that they are part of everyone’s daily life.
He expressed the
belief that its value based on business model would be ideal for the
yearning of the people and governments, adding that it is capable of providing
solution to the numerous international crisis facing the present world.
The Tide gathered that the event which will be held in Port
Harcourt soon, will also serve as an annual general meeting (AGM) of the
organisation with a target to network
for interco-operative trade/business partnerships and sensitisation.
