Farmer Lists Benefits Of Mushroom Cultivation
A mushroom farmer has said that the process of cultivating
the product was one of the easiest way to earn a living as according to him, no
physical strength was needed in the process.
The farmer, Mr. Chigala Ewoh who made the assertion during a
routine check and harvest at his farm in Uta-Ahoada in the Ahaoda East Local
Government Area of Rivers State explained that unlike the conventional farming where much space was needed, the reverse was the case in
mushroom farming.
According to him, he learned the act from his elder brother
who he said was trained by a Ghanian many years ago.
He said he became proficient as far back as 2004 and ever
since, he has been in the business, adding that he has no regrets even though
it took him a long time to learn the processes.
One major advantage mushroom cultivation has over normal
farming according to him was that the seasons are no barrier to the production
of mushroom.
“Unlike normal farming where raining season and dry my reason determine
productivity, in mushroom production, the seasons do not affect output” he
said.
According to Mr. Ewoh, any money and time spent on learning the process of mushroom production
should not be regretted because many people were becoming conscious of the
benefits of mushroom consumption to their health, a situation he said has
created substantial market for the product.
He said it was easy to break even after going through all
the hurdles of learning the act because “some time, sales can be as much as
N200,000 per mouth”, he said.
On why he was seen to be doing the business alone with his
immediate family members even when some of his relations hung around
unconcerned, he said it was regrettable.
According to him, he has made several attempts to his
siblings and other relations to join hands to enable the business grow but to
his surprise, non seem to care.
But ironically, he said it was the proceeds from the sale of
mushrooms that he sometimes offer a helping hand to some of his relations who
have refused to learn the cultivation process.
On the challenges facing him in the business, Mr. Ewoh
explained that the seed was imported from Ghana and this has been a major
challenge to him.
He therefore called on the government through the ministry
of Agriculture to intervene so that
individuals and even groups can key into mushroom production which he says
could help curb youth restiveness in the
Niger Delta region.
