Delta Moves To Check Indiscriminate Parking Of Vehicles
The Delta State Government, has commenced a clampdown
against indiscriminate parking of vehicles in unauthorised places in the state
as part of security measures.
The state’s Commissioner for Transport, Mr Benson Igbakpa,
made the disclosure in Asaba.
Igbakpa announced that 40 vehicles had been impounded,
adding that the exercise would be continuous.
He said that to ensure compliance, the ministry had set up a
taskforce on illegal parking and non-painting of commercial vehicles.
He said that the taskforce, comprising some staff of the
ministry and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers were
mandated to impound vehicles that defaulted.
Igbakpa said the fight had been taken to Abraka junction,
the Asaba end of the toll gate on the Niger Bridge, Nnebisi Road and areas with
high vehicular traffic in the city.
The commissioner said that more than 100 vehicles had so far
been impounded for failure by their owners to paint the vehicles in the
approved colours.
He said that impounding the vehicles, followed the
expiration of the 60 days ultimatum given by the government to the drivers to
paint their vehicles.
The commissioner stressed that the exercise would not end
until 100 per cent compliance level was achieved.
Igbakpa called on banks in the state to create parking space
for their customers as no vehicle would be spared if parked indiscriminately.
