Minister Explains Status Of Nigerian Cassava
The Federal Government, has attributed the non-competitive nature of Nigerian cassava in the international market to the low production of the crop in the country.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Adewumi Adesina who said this during the roll out of the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) progamme for cassava in Rivers State at Ahoada in the Ahoada East Local Government Area said that the scheme was targeted to reverse the trend.
Dr. Adesina also said that the scheme would help the government to ensure that farmers get the best for their crop, by not only increasing their production, but fix the value to enable them sell their products.
The Minister who was represented by his technical assistant, Engr. Anthony Egba blamed the neglect of agriculture in the country to the discovery of oil, stressing that the present administration under the able leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan was out to rebuild agriculture in the country.
He thanked the Rivers State Government for its massive investment in agriculture and urged for other states to emulate the Rivers State Government gesture.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Emmanuel Chindah said that the State was auditing and upgrading seven Small and Medium Enterprises (SMES) producing high quality cassava flour as well as one existing large plant producing high quality cassava flour in the state.
Hon. Chindah also said that the government was on the process of establishing a cassava market and trade development corporation to take care of the market development, advocacy and potential users of cassava based products and policy makers, to ensure reliable demand.
The Commissioner said that the exercise would herald the commencement of distribution of cassava planting materials and fertilizers to registered farmers for the 2012 planting season in the state.
While expressing optimism that cassava farmers in the state would seize the opportunity to improve their yields, he also charged them to carry the message to their various communities.
The Chairman of Ahoada East Local Government Area, Chief Cassidy Ikegbidi urged for partnership between the council and the state government to improve agriculture in the state.
