Lawmaker Seeks Autonomy For College Of Health
The lawmaker represent
ing Abua/Odual Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Augustine Ngo, has called for the upgrading of the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology to a full fledged degree awarding institution with a one governing council.
Hon. Ngo, who was conferred with a honorary award as a fellow of the college during the 14th convocation ceremony said such autonomy will enable the school to perform its mandate of training the needed manpower for effective healthcare delivery in the state.
The lawmaker, who is the Chairman of the Education Committee in the state Assembly, said the College was strategic in the development of middle level manpower to render essential services in healthcare delivery in the state.
Hon. Ngo, said he had already moved a motion seeking full autonomy for the College, and assured that he would continue to lobby the Assembly to ensure that the College gets budgetary allocation, to enable it function effectively.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology, last Friday, admitted 856 new students into its various departments.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony, the Provost of the School, Dr. Nnanna Onyekwere, said the College was poised to train health personnel to service the health sector, especially the home-based health care programme introduced by the Rivers State Government.
The provost congratulated the new students, and urged them to shun cultism and other anti-social vices and take their studies seriously.
