Ahly, Zamalek To Battle In Same Champions League Group
Cairo giants Al Ahly and Zamalek have been drawn together in the group stage of the African Champions League.
The Egyptian pair are joined in Group B of the competition by newboys Berekum Chelsea of Ghana and multiple former winners TP Mazembe from DR Congo.
Reigning champions Esperance will face their fellow Tunisians Etoile du Sahel in Group A, along with Sunshine Stars of Nigeria and AS Chlef from Algeria.
GROUP A:
Sunshine Stars (Nigeria), Esperance (Tunisia – reigning champions), AS Chlef (Algeria) and Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia)
GROUP B:
Al Ahly (Egypt), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Berekum Chelsea (Ghana) and Zamalek (Egypt)
The draw was made at Caf headquarters in Cairo early in the week.
Ahly were the final team to qualify for the last eight of the competition with victory over Stade Malien on Monday.
Ahly and Zamalek are perennial rivals but their games in this year’s competition will come under extra scrutiny because all domestic football in Egypt has been cancelled by the authorities.
Fans are currently prevented from attending any football matches, despite calls from the Egyptian Football Association for that ban to be lifted for matches featuring an Egyptian side against teams from elsewhere.
Ahly and Zamalek last met in the Champions League group phase in 2008, when Ahly topped the pool and went on to win the title for a record-breaking sixth time.
Security will also be an issue for the Tunisian derby in Group A – with domestic matches in the country also being played behind closed doors on the orders of the authorities.
In the Confederation Cup reigning champions MAS of Morocco, who dropped into the competition after losing in the last round of Champions League, will take on AC Leopards of Congo Brazzaville in the last 16.
The winners of these two-legged ties will then go forward to the group phase of the continent’s second-string competition.
In other Confederation Cup matches, Amadou Diallo of Ivory Coast will play Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca; Al Merreikh of Sudan will take on South Africa’s Black Leopards; Mali’s Djoliba will meet Club Africain of Tunisia; Dynamos of Zimbabwe will play Angola’s InterClube; Stade Malien of Mali will take on CO Meknes of Morocco and Cameroon’s Coton Sport will play Al Ahly Shandy of Sudan.

FIFA U20: Flying Eagles Narrowly Loss to Norway
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their campaign at the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup with a narrow 1–0 loss to Norway on Monday, despite creating several opportunities to level the game.
Norway took the lead in the 9th minute after being awarded a controversial penalty. The Flying Eagles pressed for an equaliser but were denied two penalty claims in the second half.
Kparobo Arierhi came close in the 47th minute when his shot drifted wide with the goalkeeper beaten, while Tahir Maigana struck the upright in the 63rd minute.
Nasiru Salihu’s rising effort in the 71st minute also went narrowly over the bar, drawing gasps from the crowd.
Seven minutes from time, Maigana again tested Norway with a long-range strike that went just wide as Nigeria continued to pile on the pressure.
Despite their dominance, the Flying Eagles could not find the breakthrough and now turn their attention to Thursday’s clash against Saudi Arabia in their second group match.
