Protests Trail Abandoned Road Projects In Bayelsa
The Ogbia Progressive Forum, a socio-political group from the Ogbia Constituency II in Bayelsa, has staged a peaceful protest over neglect of roads in the area.
The group marched to the Bayelsa House of Assembly to protest delay by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to execute road projects in the constituency.
Secretary of the Forum Godwill Ekobo, who spoke on behalf of the group, said the delay by the Ministry to award contract for the commencement of work at the Ekoli bridge road to link Ayakoro-Ologi-Anyama-Okodi-Emadike communities sparked off the protest.
Our correspondent reports that the deplorable state of Ekoli Bridge link road to Ayakoro-Ologi to Anyama and Okodi- Emadike cluster communities in Ogbia constituency II posed a serious challenge to the movement of the people.
Ekobo said: “since two years, survey work has been completed and tender for the roads construction has been advertised on national dailies by the Ministry, but up till now, nothing has been done on the project.”
The Forum called on President Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on the Ministry to expedite action on the project before it became an abandoned project.
Ekobo said that the present state of the link road to the communities could not be used by vehicles and had led to the communities being cut-off from other parts of the state.
He said that the situation had undermined the rapid socio-economic development of the cluster communities and denied the people of the areas the dividend of democratic government.
The group recalled that similar faith had befallen the areas more than 20 years ago when the then Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission (OMPADEC) awarded a road project to link the communities from Azikoro road in the state capital, but was later abandoned by the contractor.
Ekobo said that earlier commencement of work on the project, before the return of the rainy season, would benefit the people of the 17 communities that made up Ogbia Constituency II.
Addressing the Forum, the Chief Whip of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Mr Obedient Emoto attributed the rate of poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment of the constituency to the lack of good roads in the area.
The lawmaker, who represents the Ogbia Constituency II in the State Assembly, expressed displeasure over the delay on the project by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

Make God Your Anchor To Fulfill Destiny, Cleric Charges Christians … As Jaja Marks 70th Birthday
The Lead Pastor at Jesus Appointed People’s Bible Church, Ozogbe, Ikwerrengwo-Etche, in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, Pastor Promise Nwaelele, has urged Christians to make God the anchor of their lives in whatever position they find themselves, in order to attain the destinies set for them by God.
Pastor Nwaelele, who gave the charge recently in a sermon he preached at the 70th birthday anniversary thanksgiving service of Sir Donald Michael Jaja, a veteran journalist in Rivers State, said this is because any genuine child of God is a permanent target for destabilization and destruction by the devil.
Taking his text from the Bible book of Mark 4:16-17, the preacher stated that fulfilment in life for a child of God required faith, obedience to God’s word, humility and grace to withstand trials and temptations.
According to him, temptations and afflictions are bound to happen in the lives of those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
“No wonder the Bible said that those that endure till the end shall be saved”, he said.
The Clergyman said God prospers believers who are humble, not proud and conceited, and leads them to destiny fulfilment.
“David said in Psalm 51:17, that the sacrifices acceptable to God are a broken spirit, not an impatient or proud spirit”, the preacher said.
He called on Christians not to allow persecutions and afflictions to sway them from the love and blessings of Jesus Christ.
On his part, Jaja, a seasoned Journalist who retired as an Acting Editor of the Rivers State Government-owned The Tide Newspaper, gave thanks to God for honouring him by giving him the grace of attaining 70 years.
“I cannot capture what the good Lord has done for me in my entire life in this fleeting moment of thanksgiving. But, I know that without Him, I wouldn’t have been who I am today, in all spheres. Therefore, my joy knows no bounds as I give thanks to my creator today, alongside my family. Praise be His holy name”, Jaja said.
