Lawmaker Plans Sickle Cell Anaemia Treatment
The people of Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State would soon heave a sigh of relief from the scourage of sickle cell anemia scourge.
This is because the lawmaker representing Khana Constituency II in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Neimeth International Pharmaceutical Company for free treatment of victims of the disease in the area.
Hon. Kwanee who is also t he Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, disclosed that one of the modern health centres built by the Rivers State Government in Khana Constituency II in the local government would be used for the free treatment and provision of drugs to the people suffering from the ailment.
The lawmakers noted that the free treatment and provision of drugs for patience would bring relief and succour to many families and children in Ogoni land and beyond who suffer from the disease.
He said with the arrangement and partnership with the pharmaceutical company, sickle cell anemia could be managed, adding that many sufferers are usually poor and ignorant and therefore leaked financial capability to procure the drugs and treatment which are expensive.
He called on all stakeholders involved in the management of the ailment to put hands on deck to address the problem.
Kwanee advised couples to always check their genotype to avoid cases of sickle cell anaemia.
The Deputy Speaker reiterated that the programme was aimed at complementing in his little way, the health programmes of the state governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi in addressing rural health care needs.
The Tide was informed that more than 1,000 people from Khana Constituency II in Khana Local Government Area benefited from a free medical health care service provided by the Deputy Speaker in conjunction with World Outreach Mission USA, and Ogoni Christian Fellowship last year.
In his speech, the managing director, Neimeth International Pharmaceutical Plc, Mr. Emmanuel Ekunno said that the company was enamoured by the idea of collaborating with Hon. Kwanee’s constituency office in reducing the burden of sickle cell anemia on the constituents.
Ekunno commended the efforts of the Deputy Speaker at ensuring healthy life of Ogonis particularly at this time when the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) report hammered on degradation of the environment and its consequent health implications.
During the signing of the MoU, the Ministry of Health, the constituency office of Kwanee and the pharmaceutical company witnessed the occasion.
