Lassa Fever: OBALGA Boss Pledges To Partner NMA
The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Prince Timothy Nsirim, has pledged to collaborate with the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in fighting the dreaded Lassa Fever which has become an epidemic in the state.
Hon. Nsirim made the pledge during the sensitisation campaign on Lassa Fever organised by the Nigeria Medical Association, Rivers State Council at Rumuodomaya, the local government headquarters last Thursday.
In his key note address, the chairman applauded the timely sensitisation of the people and residents of the local government, saying, the sensitisation campaign was imperative going by the increased number of deaths arising from the disease recorded particularly in the South – South and South-East geo-political zones of the country, Rivers State inclusive.
The chairman further appealed to residents of the local government to maintain a clean environment that will not give room for habitation of rats which are believed to be the cause of the disease.
The disease he said was comparable to HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and other similar deadly diseases, adding that the disease was mainly transmitted by a certain kind of domestic rats and transmitted from one person to another.
