Languages To Be Taught In Schools
The Federal Government, has approved the orthographies for the learning and teaching of the three Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government languages.
The Executive Secretary of the Rivers State Reader’s Project, Dr. Tony Enyia said this during the launching of the Orthographies recently at the Omoku Civic Centre.
Dr. Enyia who attributed the approval to the intervention of the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, said that the development would hasten the translation of the three languages.
According to him, successive administrations both at the federal and state levels in the country had seriously undermined the importance of the three languages until the intervention of the present administration led by Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
Also speaking, the University Librarian of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Dr. (Mrs) Blessing Ahiazu described the initiative as a welcome development.
Dr. (Mrs) Ahiazu also said that the initiative would place Onelga languages among the comity of languages in the world, assuring of her prepardness to support the project to enable it succeed.
In his welcome address, the Chairman, Onelga Languages Development Association, Chief R.O. Nwaufa said that the ceremony was for a preview of the orthographies of the three languages of the area as approved by the government.
Chief Nwaufa said that the Association was desirous of ensuring that the languages of the area were properly developed.
“It has become necessary for our languages to be developed through proper learning and teaching as done to the English and other languages worldwide”, he said.
The chairman also paid glowing tribute to the pioneering effort of late Prof. Kay Williams, late Mr.Obulor Ochogba and others whose ideas had helped the association to forge ahead till date.
The Orthographies, he said would be developed into books and manuals for teaching in both primary and junior secondary schools.
He thanked the Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Council for supporting the association both morally and financially to achieve its objective.
