MWUN VP Urges Striking Workers To Resume Duties
Following the intervention of the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar on the strike action embarked upon by Dock Workers of Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) on Monday, the Zonal Vice President of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Port Harcourt, Comrade Waite Harry, has appealed to the workers to resume work as the union would take disciplinary action against erring members.
Comrade Harry, who handed down the warning in an interview with The Tide Maritime Correspondent in his office in Port Harcourt yesterday said the strike had since been suspended, and the workers had no option than to respect the Federal Government authority, since the on-going meeting between MWUN at the top,the management of NPA, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Security Agency (NIMASA) and the Ministry of Transport was expected to bring positive result.
He explained that it was not the union that called for the strike but that the workers on their own stayed out of work to protest against the non-payment of 16-months salary arrears owed tally clerks and security workers.
The zonal vice president said all efforts by the leadership of the union to stop the workers from embarking on such action proved abortive, and commended the bold step taking by the minister in ensuring that normal work resumes since Tuesday.
According to him, after the minister’s intervention, those in Lagos resumed work immediately while those in Warri, Port Harcourt and Calabar proceeded.
It would be recalled that the President of the Dock Workers, Mr Adewale Adeyanju, had told newsmen in Lagos that the union had been discussing with the management of NPA on the outstanding payment of the SSO workers, but to no avail, while the National President of NWUN, Mr Anthony Nted expressed dismay over the development.
