Abia And Non-indigenous Workers
Governor of Abia State, South-East, Nigeria, Chief Theodore Orji recently stirred the hornets’ nest when he suggested that he was going to remove from work people from other states of Nigeria working in his state.
Apparently overwhelmed by the prospect of meeting the payment of the new minimum wage in his state, the governor actually ordered officials to compile the list of non-indigenes in the state for eventual sack.
Since the plan was made public, many Nigerians could not hold back their disappointment. Clearly, nobody that understands the need for peace and unity in Nigeria should take that precarious path.
As a governor and as one that is widely exposed, that statement was the least anyone expected from him. Indeed, given the widespread reactions and condemnation that greeted the plan, the Abia State Government should have by now withdrawn the threat and removed the ire in the polity.
When Gov Orji took the oath of office and allegiance, he did not commit to uphold the peace of Abia state alone. He swore to keep Nigeria together. But what his divisive statement had done to the psyche of some Nigerians cannot be seen now.
Even with this clear misadventure, we cannot subscribe to the often trumpeted view that most of the problems in Nigeria are caused by the political class. Clearly, we know of many invaluable contributions made by politicians in Nigeria.
But this plan by the Abia State Governor only goes to stoke the fire for national dis-integration through the avoidable glorification of statism, ethnicism and tribalism. To suggest the sack of civil servants over the minimum wage in itself is wrong, not ot talk of doing so along ethnic lines.
Coming after the protest and destruction of property that greeted the appointment of a lady that was married to an Abia State indigene as Permanent Secretary sometime ago, the resort to beating the drum of indigenisation in Abia State at this time in our country needs to be watched closely.
We think that the governor did not fully consider the weight of his plan because Abians are very active people and have found themselves in every single state in Nigeria and even in the Civil Service. Clearly, if other governors do the same, Abia cannot provide for all her returnees.
While we approve of efforts to strengthen regional cohesion and development, the need for the various states and their people to work together cannot be discounted. Indeed, if the unity of Nigeria becomes threatened, not only the media should cry foul. The Federal Government, the Ohaneze Ndigbo and even the Governors’ Forum should call the Abia State Government to order.
Clearly, Abia is not the only state that has to deal with the anticipated burden of the proposed National Minimum Wage. Like other states, Abia should look for ways of increasing her revenue profile especially through the industrial clusters initiative.
Indeed, Abia should look for more openings for her people to meet, live and work with others and to acquire new ideas for self actualisation. Truly, the needed technological input into the economy of the state can only come with the exposure of her people.
Perhaps, the Abia State Government should know that not only do Abia State indigenes hold important offices in other states and in good number, some progressive states like Lagos and Rivers actually go on to appoint non-indigenes as Permanent Secretaries and Commissioners.
While we are persuaded that no other state would be mis-led to displace its non-indigenous staff, every Nigerian must be treated with respect, acceptance and patriotic commitment all over the country. This is the only way the country can come together and overcome the common challenges facing it.
