Rivers NUJ Partners College In Career Dev
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Rivers State Council, has reiterated its willingness to partner with Holy Rosary College, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to encourage students of the College to find fulfillment in journalism as a career.
Chairman of the NUJ in the State, Mr. Opaka Dokubo, gave the indication when students and editorial board members of the College led by the Vice Principal, paid him a courtesy visit in his office recently.
Mr Dokubo said he was impressed and encouraged to know that the College has a functional Press Club with a good number of students as members.
He commended the efforts of teachers in encouraging the students to see – journalism as· a worthy career adding that, “to educate a journalist is to educate a society”.
Mr Dokubo advised the students to take their studies serious if they were to make their mark as career journalists and by giving less attention to home movies and other pass times.
Earlier, the Vice Principal of the School and leader of the team, Mrs. Ruth Osazuwo, said their visit was to acquaint the chairman with the activities of the Press Club and to seek encouragement and support, especially towards the forthcoming public presentation of the maiden edition of HOROCO Magazine, a publication of the College. According to the vice Principal, the event, which is scheduled to hold on August 6, 2011 would attract notable old girls of the College including the Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence – Nemi.
Also speaking, the Chaplain of the College, Rev. Fr. Kelvin lie, urged the chairman to encourage the development of journalists from the Secondary School by regular visit to Secondary schools in the State and giving career talks on the profession, beginning with the Holy Rosary College.
In her reaction, the President of the Press Club, Miss Chinelo thanked the NUJ Chairman for the warm reception accorded them, adding that they benefitted immensely from the interaction.
