Council Chairman Tasks LG Administrators On Performance
The Chairman of Eket Council in Ibom Akwa Rev. Emmanuel Udoh, has charged the leadership of the 31 local governments in the state to justify the confidence of the State Assembly and the Governor for extending their tenure.
He gave the advice on Wednesday at the inaugural meeting of the management staff of the council, legislators and executive members at the local government secretariat in Eket.
The Tide source reports that Akwa Ibom Assembly on June 27, passed a resolution extending the tenure of the local governments in the State by three months. This followed the non-conduct of council elections.
The three-year tenure of the councils’ administration across the State, which began on June 27, 2008, elapsed on June 26, this year.
Udo challenged members of his executive and Heads of Departments to assess their contributions to the council in the past tenure and make amends where necessary.
He said the council, within the three- month extension, would only embark on projects that could be completed within the period.
“As we enter this new tenure, we should ask ourselves what benefits we brought to the system, because God is watching all of us and we are here for the good of members of the larger society.
“Let us justify the confidence of the Governor and the House of Assembly who took the decision to retain us, thereby continuing to render services to our people.
“Let us join hands together to leave a lasting impression within this three months period.”
Udoh said that the tenure extension would afford the administration the opportunity to implement part of the 2011 budget of the local government.
The Chairman said the council legislators recently approved the 2011 budget of N2.161 billion.
He said the council achieved about 80 per cent implementation of the 2010 budget and asked for the support of its leadership to boost the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) profile.
Udoh announced the dissolution of all Revenue Committees and directed the Head of Local Government Service, Mr Wisdom Ekpo, to deploy its staff for revenue drive.
The meeting was attended by the Vice Chairman, Mr David Lawrence, Council Secretary, Emman Abasiubong, Leader of Eket Legislative Council, Bassey Ekpo and Heads of Departments.
