Why PDP Must Go For Jonathan
Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was elected the Vice President of Nigeria on April 21st 2007 and was sworn-in on May 29th 2007 with late Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as president. He was empowered by the National Assembly as the acting president of Nigeria due to controversial and protracted ill health of the late Yar’Adua. He was subsequently sworn-in as the president and commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 6th 2010 after the death of Yar”Adua on May 5th 2010.
With this development and according to the PDP constitution, Dr. Jonathan becomes the national leader of the People Democratic Party (PDP). Besides being the national leader of the Party, President Jonathan is an asset to the party. Before the emergence of Yar’Adua and himself as president and vice president of Nigeria in 2007, Nigerians have already lost hope, trust, faith and confidence in the PDP as a result of 8 years of maladministration of PDP government led by former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Nigerians’ hope and faith began to return to the party when late Yar’Adua and Jonathan restored sanity to governance when they introduced rule of law, due process, accountability among others to their administration. The three tiers of government faired well and operated under a free atmosphere without unnecessary interference. Their government also granted amnesty to militants in the Niger Delta and thus restored peace and normalcy in the troubled region.
President Yar’Adua died on May 5th 2010. President Jonathan who took over as president continued and maintained the late Yar’Adua Style and quality of governance. He maintains rule of law, due process, accountability etc. The three tiers of government and other units of governments flourished in peace and in independence under his government. Today, there is relative peace among these three arms of government as they operates without executive interference.
President Jonathan is a patriotic Nigerian and a humane administrator. He is a president with listening ears. He is a leader who believes in the national interest and that he alone has no monopoly of wisdom to various problems bedeviling our Nation. Whenever he introduces a policy or takes a decision that Nigerians see as an unpopular and cry out, he is quick to reverse such policy. Unlike our past leaders who were indifferent and insensitive to our feelings towards their unpopular policies and decisions.
Since May 6, 2010, when President Jonathan took over, has carried himself so well and have run the affairs to the satisfaction of majority of Nigerians. For instance within four months of his administration, the three Nigerian refineries that refused to work or function over the years despite billions Naira spent on its turn around maintenance are working. Today, there is no more fuel scarcity in Nigeria. Unnecessary hoarding of petroleum products and long queue in the petrol stations are over. Indeed, last years Christmas was the sweetest because there was no stress in obtaining fuel in various petrol stations nationwide. Transportation fares during the Christmas was relative cheap compared to previous years.
Again, there is significant improvement in electricity supply in Nigeria. There is new oil and gas policies which permits oil and gas companies operating in Niger Delta, to utilise a good percentage of their goods and services from the local sources. The president is serious and sincere about qualitative education in Nigeria. For this, he had hosted National summit on education in October last year and recently inaugurated an Education Task Force. He is committed to free, fair and credible democratic election in our country. To this end, he has appointed a credible Nigerian in the person of Prof. Attahiru Jega, an academician and human rights activist as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He promptly released the National Assembly approved budget to INEC to enable them carry out their assignment without hindrance.
Today, President Jonathan is loved by Nigerians and acceptable by the international community and world leaders. It is therefore, incumbent upon the PDP delegates to appreciate his endeavors and his leadership quality and give him a chance to continue and conclude the good work he is doing beyond 2011 by voting massively for him during the presidential primaries.
