Register Now, Group Tells Ikwerre People
As the voters registration exercise enters its last lap, chairman of Ikwerre Patriotic Council (IPC), Chief Sam Ordu, has urged the people of Ikwerre ethnic nationality in Rivers State to register en mass to enable them vote at the April general elections.
Chief Ordu who made the appeal in an interview with newsmen after registering for the elecltions at his Ward 11 Ozuaha country home in Ikwerre LGA said Ikwerre who are noted for patriotic and nationalistic values cannot afford to be passive in the on-going registration of voters exercise.
Chief Ordu who is also chairman, Ozuaha Council of Chiefs and member, Board of Trustees of Rivers state Community, Abuja said he left his Abuja base to register in Ikwerreland because of the implicit confidence he has in the system and his belief that the government of the day is carrying Ikwerres along and would do more for the people in the next dispensation.
“I am therefore calling on all eligible voters of Ikwerre ethnic nationality in particularly and Rivers State in general to go out and register for the forthcoming general elections”, he said, adding “It is their inalienable right to register, which would entitle them to vote and choose the right persons that will rule them, come May 29, 2011”.
Chief Ordu drew the attention of the Ikwerres to the pronouncement of Governor Chibuike Amaechi that those who fail to register will not be entitled to certain amenities provided by the state government like free medical care, free education for primary and secondary schools and scholarship awards.
The IPC leader and chairman of Ozuaha Council of Chiefs commended President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Amerchi for impacting positively on the peoples’ lives, especially in Ikwerre land and congratulated them for their recent victory at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries at the national and state levels, respectively.
“I am confident and resolute that they will also emerge victorious at the April gubernatorial and presidential elections respectively, to continue with the good work so I enjoin all our people to vote massively for them, while wishing the president and governor, and their team God’s favour and guidance as they stem the ship of state in the remaining months of their present tenure”, he said.
