Towards Effective SIM Card Registration
Part of the programmes initiated by the National Communications Commission (NCC) aimed at making mobile telecommunications services effective include anti-phone theft initiative, number portability, wire Nigeria initiative and SIM card registration, among others.
Among these, it appears, the SIM card registration exercise pervades the generality of the populace in view of its potential for tracking criminals, especially kidnappers, armed robbers and murderers, who use mobile telecommunications services to facilitate their nefarious actions.
This is why when the NCC directed mobile telecommunications service providers like MTN, GLO, Zain, Etisalat, among others, to embark on SIM card registration, most Nigerians welcomed the initiative as a step in the right direction.
However, since the exercise began a few months ago, it appears that only the MTN is serious with it. The other service providers are yet to accord the exercise the attention it deserves as a crime fighting strategy.
We are inclined to making this assertion because apart from the long queues which characterize the MTN registration centres, it is doubtful if the exercise is being undertaken by any service provider in the rural areas where most of our citizens reside.
Without much ado, The Tide wishes to impress on the service providers that it is against our collective interest to toy with the SIM card registration exercise, which has the potential of enhancing security across the country by limiting the leverage with which criminals operate with mobile phones.
Therefore, besides opening more registration centres in urban areas, the service providers should aggressively pursue the exercise in rural areas.
In addition, toward achieving the desired success, the service providers need to embark on public enlightenment campaigns both in urban and rural areas to facilitate the exercise which has the potential of improving the security situation in the country.
This call is very imperative because when the President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Dr. Titi Omohettu visited the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Eugene Juwah, he highlighted the need for the NCC to take the lead in the campaign on the SIM card registration exercise, and consumer education.
Besides, in view of its relevance to security in the country, other service providers, apart from MTN, should embrace the plan, which could help reduce the incidence of criminality in the land.
It now behoves the service providers to open up registration centres in schools, parks, markets and other public places to ensure success of the exercise, especially as the December deadline is fast approaching.
It is pertinent to state that any issue which would help improve the security situation in our country must be embraced by all.
This is why The Tide feels that the service providers, which are yet to commence the exercise, should do so without further delay while the NCC should institute stiff penalties for defaulters.
We also recommend that service providers should ensure that customers who desire new SIM cards at the expiration of the exercise are registered at the point of purchase of the SIM cards to avoid a situation where people procure the item on the roads.
This way, order would be maintained, and the security of user would be guaranteed.
